The Neo-Soul Chord Progression

This neo-soul turnaround uses Imaj7-vi9-ii9-V9. In C, play Cmaj7-Am9-Dm9-G9. The harmony follows a familiar I-vi-ii-V circle, while extensions and close voice leading keep the upper texture connected.

Hear the first change

Cmaj7 contains C-E-G-B. Am9 contains A-C-E-G-B. Add A below the complete Cmaj7 voicing and every upper note can stay where it is.

The bass changes the harmonic meaning:

Pitch over CFunction in Cmaj7Function in Am9
Crootminor third
Emajor thirdfifth
Gfifthminor seventh
Bmajor seventhninth

A stationary hand can therefore produce a rich chord change when the bass moves.

Follow the bass route

The bass line C-A-D-G contains a descending third followed by D-G and G-C across the loop boundary. Those last two moves form a chain of falling fifths or rising fourths.

The first change provides colour with minimal upper motion. The second half creates stronger functional direction through ii-V-I.

Connect Dm9 and G9

Dm9 contains D-F-A-C-E. G9 contains G-B-D-F-A. D, F and A can remain common while C moves to B and E moves to D or disappears from the voicing.

Prioritise the third, seventh and characteristic extension. The fifth can often be omitted, especially when bass and other instruments already define the root.

Build a playable voicing

  1. Left hand bassC, A, D, G.
  2. Right hand shellE-B, then G-B, then F-C, then F-B.
  3. Add ninthsB over Am, E over Dm and A over G.
  4. Connect the top linechoose B-B-C-B or another small melodic shape.
  5. Place the rhythmdelay or anticipate one chord while keeping the pulse clear.

Harmony is only one layer of the style

Plain block chords on every downbeat can sound like an exercise. Neo-soul phrasing often uses syncopation, laid-back placement, register changes, slides, grace notes and short fills between vocal phrases.

Keep the written progression fixed while changing the timing. The ear will show how much of the character comes from performance.

Make it yours

  • Remove before adding

Drop unnecessary fifths and doubled roots so the sevenths and ninths remain audible.

  • Create one melodic top voice

Treat the highest note as a tune that passes through all four voicings.

  • Change one extension

Compare G9, G13 and G7sus4 while preserving the same dominant bass.

When it is useful

Use this circle for neo-soul, R&B, hip hop and jazz-influenced pop when the section needs smooth repetition plus a clear return to I.
