Chord Voicings

A chord symbol names a pitch collection. A voicing decides which note is lowest, how the notes are ordered and spaced, which notes are doubled and which can be omitted. Compare several Cmaj7 voicings and learn what each choice changes.

What is a chord voicing?

A voicing is the specific arrangement of a chord's notes.

Cmaj7 contains C, E, G and B. C-E-G-B in one octave is one voicing. C-G-B-E spread across two octaves is another.

Both represent Cmaj7 because the pitch classes remain compatible with the chord symbol.

What is the difference between voicing and inversion?

Inversion is determined only by the bass note. Voicing includes the order and spacing of every note.

E-G-B-C and E-C-G-B are both first-inversion Cmaj7 because E is lowest. Their upper voices are arranged differently.

Every sounding chord has a voicing. Root position and inversions classify one part of that voicing.

What is a close voicing?

In a close voicing, adjacent chord tones fit as tightly as possible within one octave.

C-E-G-B is close-position Cmaj7. E-G-B-C is the same chord in close-position first inversion.

Close voicings are compact and easy to identify. In a low register, several close notes can mask one another and reduce clarity.

What is an open voicing?

An open voicing spreads chord tones across more than one octave.

Move E from C-E-G-B above the upper B and you get C-G-B-E. The larger low-register gaps can leave more space for each note.

Drop-2 voicing takes the second-highest note of a close four-note chord and lowers it by one octave. This creates a common open arrangement for guitar, horns and keyboard.

What is a shell voicing?

A shell voicing keeps the notes that identify chord quality and function, usually the third and seventh, with or without the root.

For C7, E and B flat form the guide tones. A pianist may play C-E-B flat, or E-B flat when a bassist supplies C.

The unaltered fifth G contributes less identifying information and is often omitted. An altered fifth must remain because it changes the chord type.

What is a rootless voicing?

A rootless voicing omits the root because another instrument supplies it or the harmonic context makes it clear.

For Dm7-G7-Cmaj7, a pianist might voice F-C, F-B and E-B while the bass plays D, G and C.

Rootless voicings make room in the low register and connect guide tones smoothly. They can sound ambiguous without bass or context, so practice them inside progressions.

Which notes can you omit?

Keep the third when it defines major or minor quality. Keep the seventh when it distinguishes maj7, 7 and m7.

The unaltered fifth is usually the first omission. The root can be omitted when the bass or ensemble states it.

Keep named alterations and important extensions. In C7 flat 9, D flat is essential; removing it changes the written chord.

Which notes should you double?

In a triad, doubling the root is a common neutral choice. The best doubling depends on voice leading, register and style.

Avoid doubling a leading tone when two copies would both demand a sensitive resolution in strict tonal writing.

On guitar and piano, physical layout often creates practical doublings. Listen for balance and keep the melody note clear.

How does register affect a voicing?

Low frequencies need more spacing for clarity. Place roots and fifths low, and keep seconds or dense extensions higher when the texture becomes muddy.

Higher registers can support closer intervals, although timbre and volume still matter.

Test the same Cmaj7 voicing one octave lower and higher. The chord name stays fixed while the balance changes.

How do you voice a progression smoothly?

Choose common tones and move the remaining voices by the smallest useful intervals.

For Cmaj7-Am7-Dm7-G7, E and C can remain or move by step through several chords.

Track each voice as a melody. Smooth voice leading comes from intentional lines, not simply keeping every hand shape close.

How should you choose a voicing?

Start with four questions:

1. What note must be in the bass?
2. What note should be on top as the melody?
3. Which third, seventh, extension or alteration defines the chord?
4. Which register is free in the arrangement?

Build outward from those constraints. A good solo-piano voicing may be too full when bass, guitar and voice are already present.
