Ninth Chord

A ninth chord is a seventh chord with a ninth added. A plain C9 has C-E-G-B flat-D: start with C7 and add D. The symbol "9" carries the seventh with it. That one detail separates C9 from Cadd9, which has D but no B flat.

  • C9 = C7 + D
  • B flat is the seventh
  • D is the ninth

Write out F9 from F7 before touching the keyboard. Then play it and check the seventh and ninth.

How do you build C9?

Build C major first: C-E-G. Add B flat to make C7, a dominant seventh chord. Now add D, the note a ninth above C. The resulting stack is C-E-G-B flat-D.

Count C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C-D if "ninth" feels abstract. D is the second letter after C in the next octave. In an actual voicing, the D can sit in a different register; the chord name describes its relationship to C.

What is the difference between C9 and Cadd9?

SymbolNotes on CSeventh included?
Cadd9C-E-G-DNo
C9C-E-G-B flat-DYes, B flat
Cmaj9C-E-G-B-DYes, B natural
Cm9C-E flat-G-B flat-DYes, B flat; E flat makes the triad minor

These are related sounds with different notes. Play Cadd9 and C9 at a similar level. The new B flat introduces a different interval against E; it can give the chord more tension or movement. In Cmaj9, B natural sits a half step below the root C when brought into the same octave, which gives yet another relationship to hear.

"9" on its own normally means a dominant ninth. If the seventh is major, the symbol says maj9. If the third is minor, it says m9. The symbols save space on a chord chart, but that short form only works if the player knows which notes it includes.

Do I have to play all five notes?

Not every instrument or musical texture needs the full stack in one hand. On piano, a bassist may already be playing C, and a pianist may leave out the root. The perfect fifth, G, is also sometimes omitted if it does not define a special alteration. The third E, seventh B flat and ninth D tell you much more about the character of a basic C9.

That is a voicing choice, not a change to the underlying chord symbol. If you are playing alone, start with all five notes so you can hear the complete structure. Once you recognize it, try moving the bass C to your left hand and the remaining notes to the right.

Where is a ninth chord useful?

Try G9 before C major. G9 is G-B-D-F-A; C major is C-E-G. Play both chords slowly, then stop on G9 and compare that with letting it continue to C. The ninth A adds another upper note to the G7 sound, while F and B still provide much of the harmonic pull toward C.

A ninth chord can also sit on a repeated groove without resolving immediately. Function comes from the surrounding chords and phrase, so do not assume every 9 chord must move after one beat. Listen to the sequence you are actually playing.

Build one on another root

  1. Start with a seventh chordPlay G-B-D-F to hear G7.
  2. Find the ninthContinue the letter names past the octave G until you reach A.
  3. Add that notePlay G-B-D-F-A and compare G9 with G7.
  4. Change just the seventhRaise F to F sharp. The result is Gmaj9, so the symbol changes with that note.
