Start with C-E-G. Add B for Cmaj7 and D for Cmaj9. Those notes expand the color without changing the root.
Spread the voicing so the bass carries C and the upper voices contain E-B-D or G-B-D-E. Omitting a doubled root or fifth can create more room for the vocal.
