A common Dorian house vamp alternates i7 and IV7. In A, play Am7 and D7. The chords share A and C, while F-sharp in D7 supplies the major sixth that identifies A Dorian.

A and C can remain fixed. E falls to D and G falls to F-sharp. Every moving voice travels by one scale step, so the harmonic colour changes without a large physical jump.
Why D7 does not act like a normal dominant
D7 contains the tritone F-sharp-C and can function as V7 of G in other contexts. Here repetition, an A-centred bass and a melody that settles on A keep the vamp in A Dorian.
The chord still has tension, but the loop redirects it to Am7 instead of resolving D7 to G. Harmonic function comes from context and destination as well as chord quality.
Make the mode audible
- Hold A in the bassestablish the modal centre.
- Put F-sharp on top of D7expose the characteristic sixth.
- Lower it to Fhear D7 become Dm7.
- Restore F-sharp and add the beatcheck that the modal difference remains audible inside the production.
Voicing options

Let the bass play A and D; use C-E-G over A, then C-D-F-sharp-A over D.

Add B to Am7 for Am9 and E to D7 for D9. Both notes belong to A Dorian and add colour without changing the mode.
Build movement outside the chords
A two-chord vamp needs form from rhythm, register, density and sound. Open the filter across eight bars, remove the bass for one phrase or delay the D7 by an eighth note. Change one variable at a time so the musical cause stays clear.
When it is useful
Use this vamp when groove, vocal phrasing and production should lead while harmony supplies a recognisable modal colour. It suits deep house, downtempo, R&B and lo-fi arrangements.
