The Pedal Point Progression
A pedal-tone vamp holds one bass note while the harmony above it changes. In C, keep C in the bass and play Csus2, G/C and F/C. The pedal anchors all three sonorities to one tonal centre.

Read each sonority
| Symbol | Upper notes | Bass |
|---|---|---|
| Csus2 | C D G | C |
| G/C | G B D | C |
| F/C | F A C | C |
The slash indicates that C remains lowest under G major and F major. G/C and F/C are not inversions of C major; they are upper chords heard against a C pedal.
What the pedal changes
With root bass notes C-G-F, the ear follows three separate harmonic roots. With C under every chord, C remains continuously present and the upper shapes act as changing colour around it.
Harmony still changes: B appears in G/C, while F and A appear in F/C. The pedal creates continuity; it does not erase the chord changes.
Follow the friction
Csus2. D sits a whole tone above C and avoids choosing a major or minor third.
G/C. B lies a semitone below C, creating a strong major-seventh friction against the pedal.
F/C. F forms a fourth above C, while A supplies a warmer major-sixth colour.
Hold each upper chord long enough to hear its interval against C. The pedal is useful because it turns abstract extensions into direct sound.
Build the vamp in layers
- Bass onlyrepeat or sustain C.
- Upper dyadstry D-G, B-D and A-F before using full triads.
- Add a top lineconnect G-G-A or D-D-C across the shapes.
- Release the pedalmove the bass to F, G or A at a section change.
- Restore Chear how the return re-establishes the suspended state.
Pedal point and inverted pedal
A traditional pedal point sits in the bass. An inverted pedal holds a repeated high note while the bass and inner harmony move. Both create continuity, but the register changes which line the listener notices first.
Try holding high G over the three sonorities, then compare it with low C. One stabilises the top; the other defines the foundation.
When it is useful
Use a pedal vamp for intros, verses, builds and film cues that need harmonic colour without a travelling bass. Releasing the pedal later can mark the chorus or arrival.
