Rubato
Rubato is expressive flexibility in timing: a phrase may linger on one note and move sooner through another while keeping its larger shape understandable.

Does rubato mean there is no pulse?
No. Rubato usually bends the timing of a phrase against an underlying sense of movement. If a melody delays a high note, the next notes may move onward more quickly. The listener should still recognize where the phrase is going.
Is rubato the same as ritardando?
A ritardando directs a gradual slowing. Rubato allows local pushes and pulls: one note can be late, another can lead ahead. Try a four-note phrase first at equal spacing, then give its highest note extra time and return toward the original flow.
How much freedom is appropriate?
The style, score and other performers set the limit. In an ensemble, a soloist may flex over a steadier accompaniment, or everyone may breathe together. Avoid turning every beat into a separate pause; that hides the pattern the phrase needs in order to sound expressive.
