Presto

Presto is a very fast tempo marking. The beat travels quickly, but the rhythm still needs clear subdivisions. The marking is normally printed above the staff at the start of a piece or a new section. It guides the performer until another tempo instruction changes it.

The 180 BPM example gives you a point to try, not an official definition. Italian tempo words cover a range, and published charts do not agree on exact boundaries. If a score specifies a note value and metronome number, such as quarter note = 180, that gives a measurable pulse.

At 180 BPM, each beat lasts one third of a second. Count one beat per foot tap, then fit two even eighth notes inside it.

Keep the pulse stable before attempting dense runs. Presto is a relative instruction; its exact BPM depends on the piece and on which note value receives the beat. Listen for the distance between the main beats, not just the number of notes you play.
