Phrygian Mode
Phrygian is a minor mode with a flat second. C Phrygian places D flat one semitone above the tonic while keeping E flat as the minor third. That close tonic-neighbor interval and the major flat-II chord identify the mode.

How do you build Phrygian?
Use the formula:
1-flat 2-flat 3-4-5-flat 6-flat 7
C Phrygian is:
C-D flat-E flat-F-G-A flat-B flat-C
You can derive it by lowering degree 2 of C Aeolian or by using the notes of A-flat major with C as tonic.
Which note identifies Phrygian?
D flat forms a minor second above C.
Play C-D flat-C over a C drone. Then compare C-D-C from Aeolian.
The flat second also appears in D-flat major, the flat-II chord. Moving D-flat major to C minor keeps the tonic relation audible.
Which chords occur in Phrygian?
Stack thirds from C Phrygian:
- i: Cm
- flat II: D-flat major
- flat iii: E-flat minor
- iv: Fm
- v diminished: G diminished
- flat VI: A-flat major
- flat vii: B-flat minor
The diminished v means the mode lacks a perfect-fifth triad on degree 5 even though the tonic chord itself contains G.
How do you make C sound like the tonic?
Hold C in the bass and return to Cm.
A repeated Cm-D-flat progression can establish the flat-II relationship. Place C at phrase endings and avoid cadences that make A flat sound like home.
Relative modes share notes. C Phrygian and A-flat major need different bass, phrase and harmonic emphasis.
How is it different from Aeolian?
C Aeolian has D natural. C Phrygian has D flat.
All other scale notes are the same. Compare Cm-Fm in both, then add D-flat major to state the Phrygian flat II.
A melody that never uses degree 2 may remain ambiguous between the two modes.
How is it different from Phrygian dominant?
C Phrygian contains E flat, giving it a minor tonic chord.
C Phrygian dominant raises E flat to E natural. Its formula is 1-flat 2-3-4-5-flat 6-flat 7 and its tonic chord is C major or C7.
The names are similar because both contain flat 2. The third produces the most important harmonic difference.
Is Phrygian the flamenco scale?
Flamenco includes varied harmonic and melodic practices. Many familiar flamenco-related passages use a major tonic with flat 2, closer to Phrygian dominant than the minor-third Phrygian mode.
Calling every flat-second sound Spanish hides those differences.
Identify the tonic chord, third and cadence in the actual piece before choosing a scale name.
Where is Phrygian used?
Phrygian appears in metal, modal jazz, film music and some folk and classical contexts.
An open low string can make tonic-flat-II riffs practical on guitar. Drones also keep the tonic clear.
Genre names do not determine the mode; verify the formula and harmonic center.
How should you practice it?
Hold C and play D-C, then D-flat-C.
Alternate Cm and D-flat major. Identify D flat, F and A flat inside the flat-II chord.
Raise E flat to E natural and compare C Phrygian with C Phrygian dominant over a C-major bass.
