Ionian Mode
Ionian is the major scale. C Ionian and C major contain the same notes, intervals and diatonic chords. The modal name becomes useful when comparing Ionian with parallel Lydian and Mixolydian or listing all seven modes from one parent scale.

Is Ionian different from the major scale?
No. Ionian and major name the same interval pattern.
Use major when discussing keys, functional harmony or basic scale construction. Use Ionian when contrasting the scale with the six other major-scale modes.
The music does not change when the label changes.
Which chords occur in Ionian?
Stack thirds from C Ionian:

Seventh chords follow Cmaj7, Dm7, Em7, Fmaj7, G7, Am7 and Bm7 flat 5.
How does Ionian establish its tonic?
The leading tone B lies one semitone below C. In G7-C, B rises to C while F commonly falls to E.
That dominant-to-tonic motion strongly confirms C. Phrase endings, bass and repetition add further evidence.
A major pitch collection can also be used less functionally. The scale remains Ionian even when the music avoids V-I cadences.
How is it different from Lydian?
C Lydian raises degree 4 from F to F sharp.
That change turns F major into F-sharp diminished and Dm into D major. The D-major II chord is a clear Lydian marker.
Compare C-F-G-C with C-D-C while holding C as the center.
How is it different from Mixolydian?
C Mixolydian lowers degree 7 from B to B flat.
That removes the leading tone and changes G major to G minor while creating B-flat major on flat VII.
Compare G7-C with B-flat-F-C. The first uses functional major-key dominant motion; the second can establish a Mixolydian loop.
Is every white-key melody in C Ionian?
No. The white keys can support seven relative modes.
A melody and harmony centered on A may be A Aeolian; one centered on D may be D Dorian.
Identify the tonic from bass, repetition, phrase endings and chord motion before naming the mode.
Where is Ionian used?
Ionian appears throughout major-key pop, classical, folk, rock, jazz and many other styles.
Some pieces use strong functional cadences. Others loop diatonic chords without dominant resolution.
The shared scale formula does not force one arrangement or emotional meaning.
How should you practice it?
Play C Ionian and build a triad on every degree.
Alternate C-F-G-C and identify IV, V and I. Follow B-C and F-E in the G7-C resolution.
Then compare C Ionian with C Lydian and C Mixolydian, changing only one note at a time.
