F Major Scale

Start on F and play only white keys: F-G-A-B-C-D-E-F. The gap from A to B is a whole step, but the major-scale pattern calls for a half step there. Lower B to B flat. Now A-B flat is a half step and B flat-C is a whole step.

F major is a useful first flat key because just one changed note makes the pattern work. You can compare it with C major: six pitch names stay the same; B changes to B flat.

One flat, B flat. In written music with the F-major key signature, every B is normally B flat unless a natural sign changes a particular note. The key signature does not ban other accidentals in a piece.

Move one step counterclockwise from C on the circle of fifths and you reach F. That first move adds one flat. You can verify the relationship at the keyboard by comparing the two note sets, not just by memorizing a diagram.

Build triads from alternate scale notes. F-A-C is F major, B flat-D-F is B flat major, and C-E-G is C major. The complete seven-chord set is F, Gm, Am, B flat, C, Dm and E diminished.

Play F-B flat-C-F and listen to the last F after C. Then play Dm-B flat-C-F. The D-minor chord uses D-F-A, all inside the same key, but gives the opening a different bass and color. Diatonic Chords covers the full chord-building pattern.

D natural minor has D-E-F-G-A-B flat-C. Its pitch names match F major, but the phrase can treat D as home. Try F-A-C-F over a low F, then D-F-A-D over a low D. The changed center is easier to hear than the shared note list is to explain.

Play F-G-A-B flat-C-D-E-F, then go backward. Stop at B flat and ask which white note it replaced. If you can answer B, you know exactly what the one-flat signature is doing.
