Effective Practice
Most musicians practise too much and too ineffectively at the same time. The hours consist largely of replaying things they can already do, interspersed with making the same mistake in the same bar. It feels like work and it changes very little.

In short
Put the three side by side, because they feel identical from the inside. Playing is making music with what you already have: valuable, and it changes nothing. Repeating is running something again without a specific intention, which mostly reinforces whatever you already do, including the mistake. Practising is working on one identified problem with a plan and immediate feedback, and it is the only one of the three that reliably changes anything.
The best-known study on this asked seventeen advanced piano students to learn a difficult three-bar passage. What separated the top group was not time spent but behaviour: hands together from the start, musical shaping from the first attempt, and above all what they did the moment an error appeared.
How you practise it
The ten thousand hour rule deserves to be retired. The number comes from a 1993 study of violin students at one academy, based on retrospective estimates from three groups of ten. It was never a rule and never a threshold, and later work across domains found practice explaining a minority of the variance in performance. Practise deliberately; the hours are a by-product, not a target.
