Bb Minor Chord

B flat and D flat are black keys, while F is white. The flat spelling matters when you read the notes on a staff: D flat is the minor third above B flat.

B flat is the root. D flat is three semitones above it, a minor third. F is seven semitones above the root. If the written chord symbol has a small m, such as Bbm, the third is the note you should check first. Minor Chord gives the general formula.

When D flat is the lowest note in the whole arrangement, write Bbm/Db. With F in the bass, write Bbm/F. An inversion changes the register and bass line, while the note set stays B flat-D flat-F.

B flat minor is the home triad in B flat natural minor. It is also the sixth chord in D flat major. In that major key, the same notes have a different role because the melody and surrounding chords point elsewhere.

Try Bbm-Ebm-Fm-Bbm. These four chords come from the B flat natural-minor scale. The final Bbm repeats the first chord, so listen for the return after the middle two. If you later replace the chord on scale degree 5 with its major form, you will introduce a raised seventh from harmonic minor.

Raise D flat to D; keep B flat and F. You get B flat-D-F. Play both chords at the same volume, then alternate their thirds alone. The single changed key is the reliable distinction, even when tempo or instrument color changes.

Play B flat-D flat-F together, then D flat-F-B flat. Name the new lowest note before pressing "Hear" again. Return to root position, change D flat to D, and say whether the result is major or minor.
