E Diminished Chord

The notes are E (root), G (minor third) and B flat (diminished fifth). Their formula is 1-flat 3-flat 5. Count three semitones from E to G, then three more to B flat. B flat is a diminished fifth above E, six semitones from the root.

The diminished fifth is a tritone above the root. Playing only E and B flat isolates the interval; adding G shows how it sits inside the full chord. You may see the triad written Edim or E°.
